Bulgarian Ministry of Defence is in urgent demand for six MiG-29 engines. A public procurement worth 13.3 million euros including VAT has been announced. The deadline for submission of bids is 30 April.

2023 was to be the last year in which MiG-29s would be used for airspace protection missions in Bulgaria. But the defence ministry extended their service life after failing to secure replacement fighters it wanted to lease until the arrival of new F-16s in 2025. Because of the war in Ukraine, engines for Russian MiG-29s cannot be supplied by Russia and Poland is directing all the resources it has for this type of aircraft to Ukraine.
