The wildfire in Rila national park is spreading, with over 50 hectares of the protected territory now affected.

The battle against the fire in the upper reaches of the mountain where there were new outbreaks last night, has continued today. The main reason why the fire has been spreading is the wind, with heavy smoke hanging over the area. Social media users have reported that the smoke has reached Blagoevgrad. Juniper shrubs and mountain pine are burning below Ismailitsa peak.

More than 180 people – firefighters, troops and national park rangers – are deployed along the perimeter. A water source has been provided. An air force helicopter is expected to join the efforts to extinguish the fire, BNR’s correspondent Keti Trencheva reports.
