Ivan Ivanov, who turned 17 on 30 October, will end the year as No. 1 in the junior world rankings, the website sportal.bg writes.
The Bulgarian talent had an excellent year, winning two junior Grand Slam titles – Wimbledon and the US Open, and in May he earned the debut men’s trophy at the ITF International Federation tournament in Szentendre, Hungary.
Ivan Ivanov is junior No. 1 with 3,601 points, ahead of Max Schoenhaus, Germany with 3,063 points and Andrés Santamarta Roig, Spain, with 2,706 points. No. 4 is Bulgarian – Alexander Vassilev with 2,627.5 points.
This is a historic achievement, as Ivanov is the first Bulgarian player to have ended the season as No. 1. Grigor Dimitrov fell short of doing so in 2008 even though in September 17 years ago he did climb to No. 1. The reason – in 2008 he only played in 3 junior tournaments and therefore held no position in the rank list due to insufficient number of participations.
