The executive bureau of Bulgaria’s Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has resigned, with party leader Atanas Zafirov the only member to remain in office. The decision follows a meeting of the party’s executive bureau. A delegation, led by Zafirov, has been appointed to take part in consultations with President Rumen Radev on 17 December. The next meeting of the BSP National Council is scheduled for 10 January 2026.
The party leadership said that this decision was made as an act of collective responsibility, with the clear aim of calming the situation and guiding the party through the upcoming challenges at this critical moment for both the country and the party.
Zafirov was elected BSP chairman on 16 February this year, after Korneliya Ninova resigned. The BSP–United Left alliance is currently the fifth-largest parliamentary group.
Support for BSP has fallen to 4.9%, while approval for Zafirov stands at 8.4% (with 58.8% disapproval), according to a survey published today by sociological agency Alpha Research.
