Today Bulgaria honours the memory of the Bulgarian servicemen who lost their lives during the operation of the coalition forces for the stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq in the period 2003–2008.
On December 27, 2003, shortly before noon, a fuel tanker truck exploded near Base “India” in Karbala, which housed the headquarters of the Bulgarian battalion in Iraq. The suicide driver had his hands tied to the steering wheel so that he could not stop.
Five Bulgarian servicemen were killed and 27 were seriously wounded. All those who died were posthumously promoted and decorated.
Bulgaria took part in the mission in Iraq from August 2003 to December 2008, during which time it lost a total of 13 soldiers.
