Bulgaria
hopes to become a member of the Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2027 and successfully complete
the accession by the end of 2026, the organization's
Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said in Sofia.
He
pointed out that the country faces serious challenges related to
demographic processes, the pension system and poverty, but also
highlighted significant progress.
At the presentation of the OECD
report for 2025, it was noted that incomes in the country were
gradually approaching those in developed economies, but the gap in
productivity was significant. Growth is supported by stable private
and public consumption, based on wage growth and low interest rates,
the report shows.
Prime
Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov pointed out that Bulgaria traditionally
achieves its strategic goals even in crisis conditions. Negotiations
with the OECD on 11 criteria have been closed and the remaining 7 are
expected to be completed in 2026, the outgoing prime minister added.
