Bulgarians abroad are a strategic asset, says demographer Spas Tashev

"The demographic crisis is now a matter of national security, not just statistics," commented Associate Professor Spas Tashev on Radio Blagoevgrad.

A demographer and researcher at the Institute for Population and Human Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Mr. Tashev revealed that there has recently been some demographic stabilisation, including a positive migration balance and the return of Bulgarians from abroad.

"Bulgarians abroad are a strategic resource that the state must utilise through consistent, long-term policies," he said, emphasising the need for political stability and continuity in governance. Without this, efforts to address the demographic problem will be ineffective. 'Solving the demographic problem must be Bulgaria's national doctrine in the 21st century,' he concluded.
