GERB leader Boyko Borissov accused President Iliana Iotova of deliberately delaying the appointment of a caretaker government. According to Borissov, at the moment there are “absolutely meaningless consultations” taking place, after political leaders have already stated their demand for immediate snap elections:
“The president, Iotova, should immediately put an end to these consultations and delays and appoint a caretaker prime minister. All parties and all leaders have stated their position in favour of immediate snap elections. And by ‘immediate’ we meant that this should be in March.”
It should be clarified that consultations by the president for appointing a caretaker prime minister with the parliamentary forces individually are currently underway. Forecasts for holding parliamentary elections in Bulgaria point to April 19.
According to the Constitution, “the president, after consultations with the parliamentary groups and upon the proposal of the candidate for caretaker prime minister, appoints a caretaker government and schedules new elections within a two-month period.” However, the first two weekends in April include Palm Sunday and Easter. That is also when the students’ spring holiday takes place.
