The Dzhamala festival fills the streets of Kyustendil with masked performers

On 7 and 8 February, more than 3,500 masked performers, including kukeri, survakari, jamalari, babugeri and other traditional ritual figures, will take part in the annual Dzhamala masquerade festival in the southwestern Bulgarian town of Kyustendil, the local authorities said. Dozens of groups from across the country are expected to participate, showcasing the richness of Bulgaria’s traditional customs and folklore.

The festival continues to grow, and this year it will open with a parade of children from Kyustendil’s kindergartens and schools presenting masks they have made themselves. According to the organisers, this demonstrates that traditions are not confined to the past, but are passed down from generation to generation through children.
