At the end of April the prestigious Bulgaria Hall in Sofia came under the spell of lovely jazz music and a lot of dancing. The occasion was the premiere of the third studio album of Beloslava, Reason Why. With time the singer has emerged as an emblem of the stylish and melodious interpretation of vocal jazz in Bulgaria. She is skilled in combining quite intelligently her own tender voice with the flawless arrangements of pianist Jivko Petrov. Over time the twosome have created a few songs and have joined festivals and concerts. This has taken Beloslava to remarkable professional heights. Her latest project makes no exception. Mixing classical instruments with a jazz quartet, Reason Why is crowded with pieces that radiate a good mood and emotional fullness. A Small White Boat is one of them:
We asked the jazz singer why she selected Bulgaria Hall for her concert:
“The hall has to do with reminiscences from my childhood and is a very sentimental thing. I was a child when I was singing in the Children’s Radio Choir. In my childhood memories Bulgaria Hall is a temple of music. Besides, we wished to share the stage with classical musicians, from Arena Orchestra. With them we have recorded a few pieces that represent an elegant compromise: contemporary music involving violin, viola and cello. I gather that this is a major challenge that brings together jazz lovers and fans with a soft spot for house, funk and disco.”
Listen to Just Forgot My Scarf, one from the 15 tracks in Beloslava’s latest album.
For her work on the album, here is more from Beloslava:
“With Jivko Petrov we have been working together for twelve years. This has been a great pleasure, as he is my teacher. In the music that we create we are guided by intuition, by our common path and direction. Five years ago we decided that there was a reason why we have been doing all this together. This has hinted to us the phrase that became the album’s title.”
In the album Reason Why Beloslava has teamed up for a duet with Lyubo Kirov. Listen to them:
Pianist Jivko Petrov is music producer and songwriter of the album Reason Why. The team also includes Dimuitar Semov and Kalin Veliov, percussions, Antoni Rikev, guitar, Ventsislav Blagoev, trumpet, and Vassil Enchev, saxophone. Elena Kokorska and Alexander Slavchev are the backing vocalists. Sound engineer Dimitar Gantchev is responsible for the album’s quality sound.
On 27 May Beloslava presented Reason Why in London. On 11 June she will close the theater festival in Varna on the Black Sea with a concert based on her latest album.
