Stoyan Yankulov and Elitsa Todorova with a new album

When their first album “Drumboy” appeared in 2004, the music of Stoyan Yankulov and Elitsa Todorova was described by experts and fans as a unique compilation of the specific sound of percussions with elements from the Bulgarian singing folklore. The accent in their new album “Voda” /”Water”/ is on the vocal presentation of their songs. Let’s listen now to one of the songs, included in the album.

Both musicians continue their active participation in different projects, along with the work on their album. Stoyan Yankulov visited Greece at the end of February, invited by famous bass player Yiorgos Fakanas. Mr Fakanas resides in Athens and has performed with some of the most famous jazz musicians for the past years. Stoyan was also a guest-musician at two concerts in the Greek capital. Elitsa participated at almost the same time with her voice, percussions and a trump in the presentation of Balkan Scientist No6. This project has almost two years of history. Its creation was initiated by a Bulgarian DJ. The experimental mixture of authentic Bulgarian folklore with the contemporary club sound has been done with no preliminary preparation. Two DJs took part in the last, 6th edition of the project, Jorge – a didjeridoo performer /didjeridoo is a musical instrument of the Australian Aborigines/; Kostadin Gentshev – shepherd’s pipe and Ateshchan Yuseinov – guitar. Elitsa performed authentic folklore songs from all Bulgarian folklore regions, mixed with the electronic sound of DUB. DUB is the way the deep vibrations of the bass lines in the electronic sound are called, Elitsa explains. This is one of the contemporary music trends. Elitsa will give us details about the forthcoming performances of the duo. But before that listen to another of the new recordings.

“A premiere is coming of a project that was born quite spontaneously – Elitsa tells us. – Mario Grigorov, a recently famous composer, wrote the music to “Precious”. The movie that received 5 Oscar nominations will be a guest at the 14th Sofia Film Fest. Together with Mario and Stoyan we will surprise the Bulgarian audience right before the movie’s premiere. The new project’s length will be continued in time and the direction will be film music. We are also excited by another major event - we present our new album on March 23rd in the Sofia Live Club. Mamadou Diabate and Abdoulaye Dembele from Burkina Faso in Africa will be our special guests. We have played together with them at the Jazz festival in the town of Smolyan. Both African musicians participate in the “Vyatar” /”Wind”/ song that is included in our new album.”

An African folklore song is combined with Bulgarian folklore motives in the “Vyatar” song. Some of the titles in the CD are well known – “Voda” that represented us at the Eurovision 2007 music contest, “Zemya” and also “Brala Rouzha tsvete”. There was a video to the last song that was presented to the audience at the end of 2009. The beautiful sound of the folklore song was combined with many colors, fine dances and light butterflies. Elitsa spent almost five months at the studio of the famous Bulgarian choreographer Boryana Setchanova so that she could dance with a professional ballet dancer. And the real butterflies that fly around her have been brought specially from India. Many different songs were recorded and then 15 titles were selected among them. Compositions and arrangements of other two instrumentalists that also took part in the recordings were included in the selection. These are the pianist Roumen Toskov and guitar player Miroslav Ivanov. And we will listen to sounds, recorded at the Bulgarian seaside at the end of the CD. We will conclude today’s edition of TOM on RB with the song “Slantse” /”Sun”/.
