Highlights from RB’s March mailbox

"I listen to you all the time. You are well aware of my respect, love and affection toward you. Our relationship last for 30 years. You have always had and will always have a place in my heart," said Guillermo Klapka from Venezuela in the Facebook page of Radio Bulgaria’s Spanish programs.

In recent months, this is one of the channels through which some of our friends choose to share their views on our shows. In addition to comments in the social network, in March we received our electronic and regular mail nearly 1,300 letters and over 300 of listeners preferred the live contact with us over the phone. In March, Radio Bulgaria appeared in Serbian also in the video sharing site Youtube with a nearly 7-minute video dedicated to Bulgarian folklore. The video uses as musical background a music show of the Serbian section of Radio Bulgaria, and its creator is Milentiye Milykovich, a regular listener who for many years has been living in the United States.

Bulgarians living abroad celebrated some of the best Bulgarian holidays last month, namely Baba Marta’s Day on March 1 and March 3 – Bulgaria’s National Holiday on March 3 dedicated to the liberation from the Ottoman rule. From your mails sent to RB’s Bulgarian section, it becomes clear that almost all Bulgarian schools abroad have organized festive concerts in which, besides the children their parents were also involved.

“This year we welcomed Baba Marta in the local Bulgarian school Patriotism. We tried to have an exhibition and a poetic-musical program”, says Luba Berzharova, an elementary school teacher and board member of the Association of Bulgarian Women The White Swallow in Valencia, Spain. A festive concert on the occasion of March 3rd was held in Rome. There it is a tradition every year that the Friends of Bulgaria Association and Bulgaria Association the acquaint citizens of the Eternal City with Bulgarian culture. We learned about this from the President of the Bulgaria Association Marianne Rusimov who gave an interview for our webcasts in Bulgarian.

Stefan Manov who lives in France shares in an email his impressions of Studio Politics show: "Yesterday’s edition on March 2, 2013 / was once again a pleasure to listen to. Interesting and varied interlocutors making an overview of interesting topics remain away from the hectic journalistic manner”.

The recent developments in the country and especially the turmoil of recent months, caused by popular discontent have drawn the interest of not only Bulgarians abroad, but also of many of our listeners from all over the world.

"I follow with interest the events in your country. I hope that the upcoming early elections will allow the election of a stable government that will be able to solve all acute social issues”, writes André Biot from Belgium.

René Pigeard from France admits: “You should know that I do not forget "my Bulgarian family" and I follow closely the events in your country, considering that the political situation is just as complicated and conflicted as in France."

Paul Jamet from France is interested in organic agriculture in Bulgaria: "I am interested in many of the prospects for organic farming, which is developing quite slowly here in France. What is the situation in Bulgaria? Is there high demand for such products? What percentage of land is planted with organic crops?”, are the questions Mr. Jamet asks in his letter. He also shares the advantages he finds in the fact that Radio Bulgaria is on the Internet: "You can listen whenever you want, at whatever time you want, without thinking about the clock. In any case, I stay faithful to your evening news that I follow every day!"

Stephan Mertens from Germany even says: "After hearing your shows I understand much better the situation in your country. I hope that the early elections will result in something better, and the situation will calm down a bit. Thank you for the many features on the current developments in Bulgaria. I hope that the interim government of Prime Minister Marin Raikov will listen to protesters, and that their views will play a role in his policy, regardless of the parties. And another thing: the veto which Germany threatened to impose on Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen quite surprised me. Sometimes I do not understand the policy of Germany and those countries opposing the full Schengen membership. 2014 will come soon and then the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania will be able to move freely. I would like to tell you that your feature on thereferendum in the country was much more interesting than I expected. And also I find the series called The Radio History of the Bulgarian pop song very successful. Please keep up the good work”, concludes Mr. Mertens.

Hans Martin Winner from Germany offers his thanks for the transmission on the importance of martenitsas. "Your accurate, objective and true programs can serve as examples to me as a journalist - also believes Mr. Wiener. The musical selection between the materials is very well-chosen. I love your series “Visit Bulgaria" because you are telling of landmarks of which tourist guidebooks say nothing. For example, “A Walk in Lozen Mountain” was very gripping as well as your material for the Balkan range near the town of Berkovitsa”.

An interesting letter has arrived also from Hans-Peter Albrecht, which says that he is a pensioner living for several years in the Bulgarian town of Sadovo: "I follow with interest your shows and comments. From personal experience I know that lowering the price of electricity does not solve the problem. The main reason is the low voltage, especially in rural areas. For years, I have been trying to speak to suppliers (E.ON/Energo-Pro), but to no avail."

In a letter to the Russian section of RB, Andrey Martinyuk from Moscow reports that he recorded old shows and is now listening to them with nostalgia.

Vasiliy Vasilev from Russia sent his congratulations on the arrival of spring, and said that he liked the broadcast dedicated to Bulgarian pop diva Lili Ivanova who had a concert in Moscow recently.

Lyudmila Dementieva from Moscow has published poetry in a social network dedicated to Radio Bulgaria.

Some of the most popular topics in the Albanian language page on Facebook are those presenting the current economic situation of Bulgarians. In March, Albanian Dorian Uka from the Bulgarian minority Gorani in Albania was a guest at the radio offices here. In an informal conversation, he said that people in the village of  Shishtavec listened regularly to the broadcasts in Albanian.

Abbas al-Maliki who is a journalist in Iraq says he hopes to work for Radio Bulgaria, sending interviews with politicians and religious leaders. "I am your regular listener and I love your website!", he adds. Hamid Bariyzi from Tunisia says he had read about the interest shown by many foreign investors in Bulgarian ecological agricultural products. "I am interested in how you cultivate the land in these areas and how you achieve it?" asks Hamid Bariyzi.

Selyaetin Nazif from the village of Byala reka in Varbitsa Municipality says: "I love the wonderful programs that you produce. I listen to you most regularly. If possible, it would be better to extend your airtime in the mornings. Unfortunately we cannot hear your evening emissions as they are mixed with a lot of noise."

Greetings to the Turkish sections sends Ahmed from the village of Chernookovo near Shumen: “Dear friends, you bring me much pleasure with your voices and the songs that play in the emissions.”

Doctor Ebazer Yusuf from the village of Takach near Shumen sends a letter after a long pause “I listen to your emissions, especially your live programs and participate in them”.

A letter arrived by email from Sweden from Christian Altenius: “I had the pleasure to listen to your English broadcast on the Internet, and would like to forward my reception report. I hope you still issue QSL-cards, even though you are no longer on shortwave radio. Song of the day: "Today" by the BTR band, really good rock music! Thanks for your transmission, I would very much appreciate your QSL-verification. And I must say it is a pity that you are no longer on shortwave, but I guess this is a natural evolution, with more and more people having access to the internet across the world”.

Claudio Martijena sends a letter commenting on the material, "How a woman replaced London with northwestern Bulgaria. An interesting experience that this Bulgarian woman has accumulated after she returned to Bulgaria from London. People everywhere are always willing to believe that migrating outside the city or the country where they live, will decide as a magic wand all your problems. It is useful when someone who lived through the experience of immigration talks about the reality in other lands, as it is not always as we imagine it."

“Since you stopped broadcasting on shortwave, I have stopped following the events in Bulgaria”, says bitterly Jose Luis Corcuera Gil from Spain. “You have a nice website where the sound is even accompanied by an image, but I'm not motivated to listen to the radio online. I will try to peek from time to time in your website to keep in touch with how things are going with you. In Spain, the media rarely broadcast news about Bulgaria and unfortunately they are usually not good.”

Anselmo de Paula Camargo from Brazil writes: "I am very happy that I can hear you every day. I love Bulgarian culture. The film "Vera" featuring Itzhak Finzi, awoke my interest. I would like to learn more about other cosmopolitan personalities like Finzi. It would be really interesting if you present the biographies of prominent Bulgarian cosmopolitan figures from different historical periods such as bankers, travelers, writers, musicians and others."
