Today Bulgarians observe the Baba Marta (Granny Martha) ritual, one of the most popular traditions in this country, with millennial history. On this day people exchange special amulets called martenitsas, with a blessing for health and energy throughout the year. Martenitsas are made only for the 1 March when the start of the new farming year is given. On 1 March people, trees and livestock are adorned with martenitsas – interwoven red and white tassels – meant to bring health and prosperity. The tassels are worn either until 9 March, the Feast of the Forty Holy Martyrs, or until 25 March, Annunciation Day. The martenitsas are taken off after sighting the first stork, swallow or a blossomed tree.
