Tobacco producers from Kirkovo municipality in the Rhodope Mountains, South Bulgaria, refuse to sell their tobacco due to the low prices offered by the purchase companies. The average price of the produce in that region is below EUR 2.5 per kilogram tobacco. According to the mayor of Kirkovo municipality, the price does not correspond to the quality of the tobacco, but the purchase companies set their own quality and price. Most of the quantities produced in Kirkovo municipality were not subject to preliminary contracts. Nearly 1,000 families live on tobacco growing in that Bulgarian region. In 2015 just over 950 tons of tobacco was produced in Kirkovo municipality.
