Today Orthodox Christians celebrate the moveable feast of Palm Sunday. The Sunday before Resurrection marks the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. He entered the city riding a donkey, a symbol of peace and friendship. The path of the Savior was carpeted with olive, palm and laurel branches, willow, geranium and flowers. He had come to bring peace, love and victory and was welcomed with „Hosanna”. Palm Sunday has been celebrated since 3rd c. Across Bulgaria Orthodox Christian churches held liturgies to mark Palm Sunday. The service at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia was led by Patriarch Neophyte. Many Christians go to church and take away home blessed willow branches aimed to protect them and their families and to give them sound health and wellbeing. In the Bulgarian folklore tradition, Palm Sunday is known as Tsvetnitsa (Flower Sunday) or Vrabnitsa (Willow Sunday). Today is the name day of all who have names associated with flowers and trees.
