Today the Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks a feast day revered equally by Orthodox Christians and Catholics, as well as by other Christian denominations – the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the Holy Writ, this is the day when the Holy Mother of God ascended to heaven to join her Son.
According to popular tradition in Bulgaria on Assumption Day, August 15 after church service, ritual bread is blessed which the women then give out to friends and neighbours for health and in memory of deceased loved ones. Believers seek protection from the Holy Virgin for coping with all sorts of problems in life.
