Bulgarian Orthodox Church honours Sts. Cyril and Methodius

On May 11 the Bulgarian Orthodox church honours Saints Cyril and Methodius.

In 862 and 863 Constantine Cyril the Philosopher created the oldest Bulgarian alphabet – the Glagolitic alphabet - after which, together with his brother Methodius, translated some of the books, essential to divine service from Greek into Old Church Slavonic, thus laying the foundations of the Old Bulgarian literary language. At the end of the 9th century the two brothers were canonized and 11 May was set down as their patron saints’ day. In 1980 Pope John Paul II declared Sts. Cyril and Methodius co-patron saints of Europe. The day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and the Slavonic Alphabet is marked on 24 May.
