Hristo Stoichkov will no longer be Bulgaria’s honorary consul to Barcelona

A procedure has been kicked off, aiming at the freeing of Hristo Stoichkov from the position of honorary consul in Barcelona. The former football player of the local club was assigned with a governmental decision in 2011, but his activities in this role havefaced obstacles through the past years, as he mainly resides in the USA. He has also complicated his communication with Spain’s authorities – in a recent TV show he called the actions of the governmental police forces during the Catalonia referendum ‘a big shame’. The Bulgarian also demanded the resignation of Spanish Deputy PM Soraya De Santamaria, calling her, her predecessors and her children ‘Francoists’. Mrs. Santamaria declared her intention to take the ex-footballer to the courthouse and later on the latter apologized for his words.
