Sofia welcomes agreement on new name of Macedonia, on certain conditions

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the agreement reached between Athens and Skopje on the name of Macedonia.

In an official declaration it states that the agreement paves the way to Macedonia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The document adds that Bulgaria recognized the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name in January 1992 and the new name – Republic of North Macedonia – should not be interpreted as grounds for any possible changes to existing borders or for making claims to neighbouring countries with regard to language, culture, history and identity. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry will insist on being given guarantees by the two countries neighbouring on Bulgaria, with which this country maintains relations of partnership and friendship, that these principles will be stated unequivocally and reaffirmed in the agreement between the two.
