The European Court of Auditors announced that it would start inspecting the construction of roads in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Spain financed by the EU. The auditors will examine whether the European Commission’s actions and funding are ensuring that the EU members remain on track to complete the network on time and improve connectivity for citizens. From 2007 until 2020 the EU allotts nearly EUR 82 billion for construction of roads and the major beneficiaries of funding are countries in Central and Eastern Europe. EU funding has helped to improve transport links between member states and regions in recent decades, but there are still gaps, missing links and bottlenecks in the road network, the European Court of Auditors announced.
