USA welcome Bulgaria’s efforts to modernize its armed forces

In a phone conversation with Bulgaria’s Premier Boyko Borissov the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the efforts of the Bulgarian government aimed at modernizing its armed forces and reach the NATO target to spend 2% of its gross domestic product on defense. Premier Borissov informed Mike Pompeo about the efforts of the Bulgarian cabinet to fulfill the projects for construction of gas interconnector with Greece and a second nuclear power plant in Belene. Boyko Borissov and Mike Pompeo also discussed the good results of the bilateral cooperation in the security field, the fight against smuggling and human trafficking. Bulgaria’s Premier Borissov and the US Secretary of State Pompeo exchanged opinions on the situation in the Balkans and on other parts of the globe. Boyko Borissov voiced concern with the situation in Syria.
