The 760th anniversary of the creation of the famous pre-Renaissance murals in the Boyana Church and 40 years since its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List is marked this year. On this occasion, the National Museum of History and its "Boyana Church" section are holding an international conference dedicated to this iconic monument. The Boyana Church of St. Nicholas and St. Pantaleimon was renovated and decorated in 1259 with donations from the local governor Sevastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava.
The author of the ingenious works is collectively known as the "Boyan Master". The murals of 1259-240 images in total – are masterpieces of Bulgarian and the Byzantine art schools of that time and contain a number of innovative elements. Particularly interesting is the portrait of medieval Bulgarian woman Dessislava.
