Cheese with water content exceeding 70% sold on Bulgaria’s market

A study of Active Consumers Association on 30 brands of white brine cheese sold on the Bulgarian market showed that water content in half of the products exceeds 70%, whereas according to the national standard, water content in this product must not exceed 54%, the association’s chairman Bogomil Nikolov told BTV. “It turns out that instead of cheese we are buying expensive water, Bogomil Nikolov commented.

Following amendments to the food hygiene regulation that introduced stricter requirements for the manufacture of imitation products, disloyal producers have begun substituting palm oil with water.

Active Consumers Association are proposing amendments to the regulation, according to which all products with water content exceeding 62% should be sold as imitation products.
