On 8 September the Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the 12 biggest Christian holidays, known also as Little Virgin Mary. All churches in the country started the day with church services.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a much loved feast at which fairs are held throughout the country. According to tradition, the woman of the house bakes a festive loaf. Women should not sew or weave on this day so as to keep the children of the house healthy.
