The Commission for Protection of Competition has rejected the proposal for introduction of quotas for Bulgarian music on the airwaves on the grounds that it would limit competition. The proposal for amendments to the Radio and Television Act was submitted by VMRO party.
The existence of quotas for Bulgarian music would lead to unification of radio stations and music TV channels. Radio stations and TV channels which have to change their concept in order to broadcast more Bulgarian music risk losing their traditional audience. Moreover, their revenues from advertising may decrease and they may leave the market, the motifs of the Commission for Protection of Competition read. The introduction of financial incentives for broadcasting Bulgarian music would put radio stations for Bulgarian music in privileged position, the commission further notes.
