MEPs ask Bulgaria’s Prosecution about investigation into corruption scandal

Photo: European Parliament

MEPs from the European Parliament's Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG) have asked the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office at what stage the investigation into the possible money laundering with the alleged participation of Premier Boyko Borissov in the so-called Barcelona-gate saga was.

The MEPs are also interested in whether the Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the leaked audio recordings with the words allegedly belonging to Premier Borissov and the photos from his bedroom showing drawers full of gold bars and bundles of 500-euro notes. The MEPs are also asking for clarification on whether the technical expertise confirms that the voice of the audio recordings belongs to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, whether the Prosecutor’s Office has identified the people the man on the tape is talking to and whether investigations concerning trading in influence have been launched. In connection with the forthcoming Parliamentary elections in Bulgaria, DRFMG is interested in whether the authorities are ready to allow an independent audit of the voting machines.
