On February 23, Bulgaria marks the 150th anniversary since the First Council of the Church and the People in Constantinople in 1871. 12 clerics and 36 laymen took part in it. The council drafted and adopted the statute of the Bulgarian Exarchate.

The Bulgarian Exarchate had religious and educational activities in Bulgarian municipalities in Moesia, Thrace and Macedonia. The accession of the Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola dioceses to the Bulgarian Exarchate was voluntary, by conducting plebiscites under the control of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
