President Radev: Businesses and citizens expect solutions to the energy crisis

“The government should not allow politics and geopolitics to destroy our economy”, Bulgaria’s head of state Rumen Radev said during his visit to the town of Plovdiv. Urgent, reliable and sustainable measures and solutions are needed, not merely good intentions, Rumen Radev noted.

The energy-intensive enterprises, which are the backbone of Bulgaria’s industry, cannot be abandoned amidst an acute energy crisis, which requires timely and adequate measures and predictability in pricing policy, Rumen Radev noted. In his words, citizens and businesses are monitoring the government's actions towards adopting compensatory mechanisms and lowering electricity and natural gas prices. "Businesses need clear commitments," Rumen Radev added.

There is a future for nuclear power in Bulgaria and a decision on this issue must be taken as soon as possible, President Radev said in response to a question about the future of the Belene nuclear power plant project. The European Commission’s decision to label nuclear energy as green is a success for Bulgaria and other European countries. "The European Green Deal is our future. However, investments in basе load power are needed for decades to come and nuclear power is the cleanest source of energy", Rumen Radev added.
