Despite calls to cancel this year’s celebrations of Bulgaria’s national day over the war in Ukraine, the marking of the 144th anniversary of the Liberation of Bulgaria will go ahead. Prime Minister Kiril Petkov will take part in the commemoration on Mount Shipka where one of the most important battles of the Russo-Turkish War was played out.

President Rumen Radev and Vice President Iliana Iotova will take part in the hoisting of the national flag ceremony in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Sofia, where they will honour the memory of all those who have laid down their lives for the freedom of Bulgaria. They will also attend the ceremonial firework display in Narodno Subranie square (National Assembly square). President Radev will salute the army units and deliver an address.
