Petrohan Pass remains closed due to torrential rains

Petrohan Pass in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), which is the most direct route from the capital Sofia to the towns of Montana, Vidin and Lom, remains closed until Tuesday as heavy rain led to road collapse. Bulgaria’s outgoing Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Grozdan Karadjov conducted an inspection. Machines are removing the landslides. Part of the road is literally missing.

Minister Karadjov will also visit the town of Varshets, where Botunya River swept away three pedestrian bridges, towed a cargo vehicle and a passenger car and flooded more than 20 houses. A partial state of emergency has been declared in the town. No people were reported injured.
