Bulgaria’s health authorities have registered a dramatic increase in scarlet fever cases in the country. Scarlet fever is caused by a bacterial infection and mainly occur in children between 2 and 9 years of age. Since the beginning of 2023, scarlet fever cases have reached 3,100. For comparison, only 46 cases of scarlet fever were registered in the same period last year.

Streptococcal pharyngitis is the inflammation of the tonsils/pharynx. If the infection is caught late, the child can develop the more specific form known as scarlet fever," explained paediatrician Dr. Boryana Georgieva.
