President Rumen Radev is to inaugurate a Mountain Medicine Academy at the Sofia Lozenets university hospital today. The initiative is taking place under the patronage of the Bulgarian president, with the aim of training specialists in specific fields of mountain medicine, in light of the launch of the HEMS air ambulance service. Yesterday, 30 March, Health Minister Assen Medjidiev signed an agreement on the delivery of medical helicopters with the Italian company S.p.A, with the first helicopter expected to be delivered in December.
Bulgaria is expected to have air ambulance services by mid-2023. It is the only EU country without medical helicopters.
