Newest protected area in Bulgaria is in village of Drangovo, Eastern Rhodopes

The site of the rare species Verbascum spathulisepalum in the village of Drangovo in Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodope Mountains has been declared a protected area. This was done by an order of Bulgaria's Minister of the Environment and Water, Julian Popov.

The territory is located in the land of the village of Drangovo, Kardzhali Municipality, on an area of 80,818 decares.

The Verbascum spathulisepalum is one of the rarest species of plants in the Bulgarian flora, included in the Red Book of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Endangered Species category. It is found only in the Eastern Rhodopes and in some parts of Greece. 

The change in the status of the locality will contribute to the preservation of other important plant species - Aethionema rhodopaeum, Silene fetlerii, Thymus jalasianus, Saponaria stranjensis.
