On October 25, 1878, or exactly 145 years ago, the first Red Cross organisation was established in Bulgaria. This happened in Sliven under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Seraphim Slivenski.

Immediately after the Unification of Bulgaria, the national organization was established with Metropolitan Kliment as its chairman on September 20, 1885. Bulgarian prince Alexander Battenberg confirmed this with an official decree and became a patron of the Bulgarian Red Cross. In October, 1885, the organization was recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.
