The Nuclear Regulatory Agency has granted Kozloduy NPP permission for a phased transition to a new type of RWFA nuclear fuel for Unit 5 manufactured by Westinghouse. The changeover process will take four years.

The agency said that the process of reviewing the technical documents to ensure the safe operation of the new fuel type has involved significant human resources, both from NRA and from external Bulgarian and foreign technical support organisations.

5th unit of Kozloduy NPP
Upon the arrival of the Westinghouse fuel delivery at the plant on 20 April, Bulgaria's Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov reminded that a fuel diversification contract has been signed with the French company Framatom for Unit 6, and thus full independence of Kozloduy NPP will be achieved.

Currently, both units of the Bulgarian NPP are loaded with Russian nuclear fuel.
