The new Bulgarian Patriarch, Daniil, has spoken out in favour of reconciliation within the Orthodox churches.

"There is a broken communion between some Orthodox churches, which we should try to overcome," he said in response to a question from the BGNES news agency on whether there was a division in the Orthodox world.

A service for the enthronement of Patriarch Daniil as Metropolitan of Sofia was held last night in the capital's St Nedelya Church, followed by a short funeral prayer, known as the Trisagion, at the tomb of the Patriarch Neophyte, located under the colonnade of the temple, and a liturgical procession.

Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin was elected Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia after the passing of Patriarch Neophyte in March. Daniil was voted in as head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church by the delegates of the Patriarchal Election Council by 69 votes to 66 on 30 June this year.
