The MusicAnts quartet

A gala concert of the “MusicAnts” quartet on October 7th in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall marked the beginning of the Fifth season of “Bulgarian concert evenings in New York”. Violin players Teodora Hristova and Gratziela Panayotova, viola player Ralitsa Cherneva and cello player Stoyan Bozhkov are members of the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra. MusicAnts String Quartet was founded in 2005 by the four musicans. They were brougth together by their passion for chamber music. The quartet performs regularly throughout Bulgaria, Germany and the United States. An advocate of contemporary music, MusicAnts commissions and records works by such Bulgarian composers as Georgi Andreev and Tsenko Minkin. In addition, they were the first Bulgarian group to perform works by Astor Piazzola, Erich Korngold and Frank Martin.

This was the quartet’s second visit to the USA. Last year they gave two concerts and this year – five. Two in Chicago, two in New York and one in Manasas, Vigrinia. More from Gratzieal Panayotova:

“During our second tour in the US we gave five concerts. Two of them were organized by Ani Gogova, a Bulgarian who teaches in Roosevelt University, Chigaco. We also played at Carnegie’s Hall. With our gala concert we opened the 2009 – 2010 season. We also performed at the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington. There we participated in the cycle dedicated to Bulgarian music and musicians. Artistic director of this new initiative is professor Ivo Kalchev. We especially chose works by Marin Goleminov and Georgi Andreev in order to present different generations of Bulgarian musicans. But it is also trie that we enjoy playing their music. All our concerts began and ended with Bulgarian compositions. The audience was of Bulgarians who live in the States and Americans, of course. We were excited by the way they accepted our music. The success of the Bulgarian compositions enspird us to strive and widen our repertoire with new pieces”, says Gratziela Panayotova.

The musicians from the “MusicAnts” quartet intend to perform their programme from the US tour on Bulgarian stage as well. Ani Stoicheva and Lora Chekoratova – both pianists – and organizers of “Bulgarian concert evenings in New York” and violin player Georgi Valchev will also participate in the concert that “MusiAnts” will give in Bulgaria.
