Bulgaria is a key regional partner of Europol in fighting organized crime. That was the firm statement of the Director of the European Police Service Rob Wainright after his meeting in Sofia with the Bulgarian Vice-Premier and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who had invited him. Europol has been an agency to the EC since January 1st 2010 that has been coordinating the work of the police forces of EU member-states against the cross-border criminal activities and terrorism. Mr. Wainright discussed at the meeting with the Bulgarian Deputy Premier current investigations of organized crime gangs for human and drug trafficking, illegal emigration and money laundering. According to Mr. Wainright Bulgaria has a huge progress in fighting organized crime on the Balkans and around Europe. The last example for that was the joint police operation, called “Avalanche” that took place a few days ago.
