State-of-the-art birdwatcher visitor center opens doors in Pomorie

Known since ancient times for the wonderful properties of its curative mud, the Black Sea town of Pomorie has not stopped attracting visitors from across the world. Apart from the celebrated mud treatment, the town provides options of cultural, historical and wine tourism.

The hottest news for tourists willing to come by, is the recent opening of the best-equipped birdwatcher visitor center on the Bulgarian Black Sea. Lake Pomorie Visitor Center was founded through the joint efforts of the World Bank, the Green Balkans Foundation and the Municipality of Pomorie. The new facility is close to Lake Pomorie and the unique Museum of Salt. It has a conference hall and 10 points for simultaneous bird watching. There are other halls, as well as offices for the teams that are going to monitor the preservation of species and habitats at Lake Pomorie. The lake is a lagoon lying 25 to the North of the port of Burgas and belongs to Bulgaria’s wetlands. This humid zone is salty and stands out with a remarkable diversity of birds and other animals. For millennia the lake has been the source of salt, and in the last 60 years, of curative mud as well. In the last 10 years it has emerged as a lucrative bird-watching point and as an environmental tourism destination. The Municipality of Pomorie has supported the new visitor center project with EUR 200,000, says Pomorie Mayor Petar Zlatanov.

“The center was built on a municipal plot and is municipal property. Jointly with the Green Balkans we plan to continue work on the project that includes rehabilitation, restoration and preservation of Lake Pomorie. New eco trails will cover the entire perimeter of the lake. For a start an 800-m long trail will be built. The visitor center is still not active, but we hope it will start full operation by mid-summer.”

The lake is inhabited by 266 bird species. 90% of them are on the verge of extinction and are listed in Bulgaria’s Red Book of Endangered Species meaning they are protected by both Bulgarian and international law. Apart from birdwatcher points, visitors of the Lake Pomorie center will be invited to watch video materials about the lake. Pomorie Mayor Petar Zlatanov says the town expects more visitors from Serbia and Macedonia this year. Hopefully, interest in the center will not be confined to the summer.

“We expect keen interest from ornithologists. For example, in October the outset of bird migration is a very interesting phenomenon. Others might be interested in egg hatching starting from April. Birds can be watched through the center’s telescopes for at least 8 months a year. We hope that with the help of the Green Balkans we will be able to attract more visitors to the region of Pomorie and to create better conditions for work.”
