The Bulgarian national football team scored its first victory in the qualifications for the European Football Cup in 2012 by taking the upper hand over the team of Wales with 1:0. The match was the debut of the new coach of the Bulgarian national team, Lothar Matthäus. After a first half with no goals, the Bulgarian team took the lead and created several risky situations in front of the goal line of Wayne Hennessey. In one of them, Bulgarian striker Ivelin Popov used a perfect pass of Blagoy Georgiev and scored a beautiful goal in the 48th minute. Both teams had favorable situations but the Bulgarian team managed to keep the score intact until the end. The victory of the Bulgarian team brought it to third position in G qualification group, with chances for qualifying for the championship. Wales and Switzerland are respectively at 4th and 5th position, with zero points, and Montenegro has come first in the group followed by the team of England after a victory over Switzerland with 1:0. The next matches in the group will be played on October 12, when England will be host to Montenegro, and Wales will be visiting team in Switzerland. On the same day, the Bulgarian national team will hold a control match against Saudi Arabia which will be played in Istanbul.

Bulgaria’s national men’s volleyball team has scored a victory with 3:0 games over the team of Germany in a match for the 7th place at the World Volleyball Championship in Italy. After a loss from Cuba last week with 2:3 games, the Bulgarian team lost its chances of qualifying for the finals but stayed in the battle for the places from 5th to 8th.

Bulgaria’s best basketball team, Lukoil Akademik (Sofia) will play against the teams of Lugano Basket (Switzerland), Benfica (Portugal) and Tartu Rock (Estonia) in “C” group in the third biggest European Basketball Championship EuroChallenge. On November 16, Lukoil Akademik will play as host versus Benfica, and a week later they will be the visiting team in Estonia playing versus Tartu Rock.

Bulgarian racers Krum Donchev and Petar Jordanov with Peugeot 207 S 2000 won the first place in this year’s edition of Tvarditza Rally in Bulgaria. This victory guarantees them the first position in Bulgaria’s final standings for 2010, a round before the end of the season. Thus, the European vice-champion defended their title from last year and won the fourth title in their career.

Bulgaria has won the 2010 team title in the East European Motocross Championship, and in the individual categories, Michael Ivanov (class 85 cc) and Yanko Tashev (class MX 2) won two more titles. Romanian contenders Robert Tompa and Adrian Raduta won the first places in the remaining two classes - 65 cc and MX 1.

Last, the latest from the realm of rhythmic gymnastics:
Bulgarian top rhythmic gymnasts Silvia Miteva and Monika Mincheva won the 6th and 10th place in the all-round competition at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament AEON Cup 2010 held in Japan’s capital Tokyo. The current Olympic and World title holder, Russian Evgenia Kanayeva, won the AEON Cup. The silver went to Russian Daria Kondakova, and the bronze went to Belarusian gymnast Melitina Stanyuta.
