Jazz Plus Festival

Spring in Sofia has been flying on the wings of jazz music – thanks to the seventh edition of Jazz Plus Festival. The organizers have invited musicians from Brazil, UK, Germany, Spain, Poland, Hungary and Sweden. In terms of format, this year the festival is focused on smaller bands. The festival opened on 15 March with a solo concert of the Italy-born British guitarist Antonio Forcione, a charismatic acoustic musician. He is keen to break away from conventions and provides guitar performances enriched with African, Spanish and Brazilian elements. On 22 March audiences enjoyed a performance of the duo Ferenc Snetberger (guitar) and Markus Stockhousen (trumpet). The two teamed up in 2000 and soon attracted the attention of jazz lovers. Their music is jazz combined with world music and electronic motifs.

The seventh edition of the Jazz Plus Festival continues on 28 March with a concert of Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson and Polish pianist Leszek Mozdzer. On the 1 April Sofia jazz audiences are welcome to listen to three Spanish musicians – Javier Colina (double bass), Marc Miralt (percussion) and Petrico Sambeat (saxophone). This band has launched a few projects with the use of a wide range of expression means – from jazz to flamenco and Cuban music. On the 6 April is the last concert in the Jazz Plus Festival. It will open with DJ Dossyu Amudjev, a radio host and music critic who has been promoting funk, acid jazz and fusion in Bulgarian nightclubs since the mid-1990s. His appearance will be followed by performances of Hidden Orchestra from Scotland who are presenting their debut project Night Walks. Listen to one of their works.
