Bulgarian football team in tournament for Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff cup

Football fans in Bulgaria have been delighted to hear recently that the team of Botev from the town of Vratsa has been invited to participate in the annual football tournament for the cup of the Brazilian President. Newly elected president Dilma Rouseff has never tried to conceal her Bulgarian origin and she insisted that a team from her father’s country should be invited to the tournament.

But why Botev? The team carries the name of the great Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev, who died at the age of 28 fighting for freedom against the Ottoman army. The team is also one of the oldest Bulgarian clubs with 90 years of history. But still its best achievement is the bronze medals from the Bulgarian Premier League in 1971 and three participations at the Bulgaria Cup finals. It is true that after years of playing in the second division, the team of Botev marked a great success in 2010-2011, placing first and thus moving to first division. The reason why Botev was chosen, however, may become clearer after the end of the tournament in the land of football masters.

The matches will be played in the period July 10-17. Guest teams and champions of the 4 biggest Brazilian states will take part in the competition. The Bulgarian footballers feel genuine respect towards the players from 5-time world champion Brazil but still have big ambitions for the tournament.

The event will also be a chance for promoting the history, culture and tourism in town of Vratsa and the country as a whole. The Bulgarian delegation leaving for Brazil will include 35 people, among them officials from the municipality of Vratsa who will try to boost contacts with one of the biggest economies in the world. Vratsa is convinced it has a lot to offer to Brazilian business.
