Today’s Time Out for Music on Radio Bulgaria is devoted to the celebrations marking the Bulgarian unification that took place in 1885.

Among the first Bulgarian patriotic songs are the ones written by the poet and composer Dobri Chintulov. Some of his best known songs and marches are Rise Up, Rise Up, Balkan Hero, The Wind is Resounding, the Mountain is Moaning, and Where are you, Faithful Love of the People? These works, known today as the “eternal songs of Bulgaria”, played a vital role in shaping the new music culture after the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination. Listen next to Dobri Chintulov’s The Wind is Resounding, the Mountain is Moaning

The song Shumi Maritsa was sung by Bulgarian soldiers during the Russo-Turkish war of liberation in 1878. After the Bulgarian unification, this song was adopted as the country’s national anthem until 1948. Listen next to it.

The poem Where is Bulgaria written by Ivan Vazov – one of the classic writers in Bulgarian literature – turned into a popular patriotic song in the turn of the 20th century. Listen next to it.

In 1916 in Ohrid, the patriotic song Great is our soldier was written as a march for 23rd Shipka regiment. Konstantin Georgiev who wrote the lyrics and Mihail Shekerdzhiev who wrote the music were troops in the regiment. You will hear the march performed by the ensemble of the Bulgarian Army.

You are beautiful, my fatherland is a song written by Emanuil Manolov after a poem of the Bulgarian poet Petko Slaveykov. The song is performed by Hristina Morfova choir.

Composer Alexander Morfov wrote many patriotic songs. His earliest work entitled We will prevail was written in 1900. You will hear the song performed by the Guard’s Brass Orchestra.
