The Gorge of Kresna is a picturesque nature site in Southwestern Bulgaria. It is reputed among the fans of beautiful nature. Over the past dozen years it has become increasingly popular among those who look for challenging outdoor activities. The locality of the gorge is ideal for extreme aquatic sports.

Here is more about the place from Emilia Begounova who represents the Adventurous Network. Its mission is to promote adventure sport amid Bulgaria’s lovely nature.

“The Gorge of Kresna”, Mrs Begounova says, “is part of the River Strouma Valley. This locality is quite suitable for white water rafting that includes navigation of turbulent river waters with an inflated raft. For the past ten years our organization has been working to attract more tourists who are keen on action sports amid nature. This region is very scenic wedged between Pirin Mountain and Mount Malashevska where a few mountain bike routes have been created”, Emilia Begounova goes no to say. “Great views open up towards the waterfalls along the River Strouma tributaries. There are many tourists coming for the mineral springs in the region. However, it is freesport that has made this particular section of the river so very popular. Well, the great news is that anybody is welcome without any training in advance or any special equipment. Everybody is welcome to enjoy a rough adventure along the river.”

Unsurprisingly, the number of those willing to navigate the white waters of the River Strouma has been rising constantly. It is also the perfect location for canyoning, or travelling in canyons using various techniques. This action sport often includes walking, climbing, double-rope descending, jumping and swimming. The locality is also good for less intensive outdoor activities. The region of the Gorge of Kresna is a starting point of many routes in the Pirin Mountain. The chalets of Sinanitsa, Damyanitsa, Vihren and Kamenitsa are only some of the places ready to welcome enthusiastic mountaineers. The Gorge of Kresna is the habitat of some rare animal and plant species included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The Tisata Nature Reserve is known as the largest natural deposit of Greek Juniper not only in Bulgaria but in Europe as well. The Gorge of Kresna is visited by nature-lovers throughout the year, however it seems that early spring is the busiest time for action sport along the river. It is the season of high waters and white water rafting is most challenging.

“Very often the fans of the ski tracks in the nearby winter resort of Bansko, choose to diversify their holidays and come to the Gorge of Kresna to do some white water rafting along Strouma”, Mrs Begounova says. “Here they can also go mountain biking or horse riding. Both the summer and autumn are great for such activities, especially the autumn that tends to be very mild owing to Mediterranean influence. Since the Gorge has become an attractive destination, the locals have opened a few guesthouses and hotels to meet tourist demand.”

Very soon the fans of action sport will have the chance of enjoying even better conditions for tourist experiments. The Municipality in the nearby town of Simitli has been working on a project worth EUR 4.5 million for the development of extreme tourism. This will definitely boost white water rafting, climbing and mountain biking in the region. In this way the town of Simitli will emerge as a center of adventure sport, and the Gorge of Kresna as an even more popular tourist destination.
