A number of events to mark Bulgarian Liberation Day in Brussels

A number of events in Brussels are to mark March 3 – the Bulgarian Liberation Day. Authentic Bulgarian music will be played on March 1 in the headquarters of the European Commission, while guests will try Bulgarian dishes and wines and will have the chance to see Bulgarian art masterpieces on display. Organizers of the event dedicated to the 134th anniversary since the Bulgarian liberation from Ottoman rule are the Bulgarian government and European commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

Traditional Bulgarian dishes will be served at the restaurant of the EC, while European officials will be given the traditional martenitsa - a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and worn in the beginning of the spring. The art exhibition in the EC, including priceless works by Vladimir Dimitrov - the Master, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, and Dechko Uzunov, will be opened by Bulgarian Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov. The paintings are displayed for the first time in Brussels and guests will be able to enjoy them until March 9. Singer Elitsa Todorova is also to perform during the celebrations in the EC.

On February 29 another event entitled Bulgaria: Land of Spirit and Letters will take place in the EP under the auspices of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev. Here is what MEP Andrey Kovachev told the Bulgarian National Radio.
“Guests to the event will be about 120 young people with Bulgarian roots from Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, and Macedonia. There will be young visitors from Bulgaria too. Our goal is to make them acquainted with the European institutions and show them Bulgaria is actually a very active member of the bloc. The event in the EP also aims to show our European colleagues that Bulgaria is truly a land of the spirit and letters. We focused our event at the Bulgarian alphabet – the Cyrillic and organised an exhibition dedicated to the topic. The event is under the auspices of Bulgarian president Rose Plevneliev and there will be a number of high-level guests.”

Mr. Kovachev told us more about the way Bulgarian cultural traditions would be presented.
“We start with presenting the Bulgarian tradition of giving martenitsi to people on March 1. The whole week will be full of a number of Bulgarian cultural events including an exhibition of world-famous Bulgarian artists. We have also invited Bulgarians working in Brussels and Belgium and hope that many people would come to the events. The exhibition dedicated to the Cyrillic alphabet also has another goal. We would like Bulgaria to apply before UNESCO for including the Bulgarian alphabet in the list of world intangible cultural heritage. I am also going to give martenitsi to all my colleagues in the EP and tell them about their symbolic meaning,” MEP Andrei Kovachev says.
