Who is the most influential Bulgarian? He is the master of his own fate, has an exceptional talent of daily communication with voters and of transforming crises into opportunities. With a good understanding of the problems of Bulgarians and with the conviction that statehood and order are top priority, he avoids conflict in which he cannot end up as the winner. He has too much media presence but he wants to be visible. Who is he?

This is the Bulgarian Prime Minister and the name of the winner in the nomination of the most influential Bulgarians is read out by Forbes Bulgaria Magazine editor-in-chief, Yordan Mateev.

What does Barack Obama, Dalai Lama, Vladimir Putin, a billionaire dealing in drugs and the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg all have in common? They are included in the latest Forbes nominations for the world’s most influential individuals. Now Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov and the rest of Bulgaria’s Top 10 have sided with them. It includes also Finance Minister Simeon Djankov and the man who has got access to secret information archives, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov. The Top 10 also includes President Rosen Plevneliev who has come up with a vision to rearrange the agenda of society.

The list of the most influential Bulgarians includes 30 individuals who according to Forbes are of paramount importance for the country. The chart has been made following the criteria used by Forbes for many years. These include the number of people that the nominee can influence, the financial resources he or she controls, the sphere he or she is active, and how he or she makes use of the opportunities available to transform Bulgaria. The Top 30 includes 14 politicians and statesmen, 12 business people and four individuals from NGOs. The average age of those in the chart is 49. Banking, energy and media have the strongest presence in it among other sectors of economy.

“Forbes Magazine is globally known for its charts. We will gradually launch analogous charts in Bulgaria”, explains Yordan Mateev. “The Bulgaria Top 30 is based on in-depth research and a clear methodology that Forbes has been using for years.”

There are four women featuring on the Top 30 list. The only woman in the Top 10 is banker Tsvetelina Borislavova. She ranks tenth. Surprisingly, there is a man outside business and politics that has been nominated, Georgi Angelov, 32, the youngest nominee. He works as economist at the Open Society Institute. His major resource is knowledge. He has the capacity to influence public opinion, Yordan Mateev said. Let us recall that Georgi Angelov is a leading economic analyst who is often invited to our programs too. One of Bulgaria’s celebrated TV hosts who has for 11 years been making the most successful talk show in this country, Slavi Trifonov is also among nominees.
