Jazz singer Miroslava Katsarova and her new album

Gentle melancholy rendered in a bossa nova style – this is the new project of jazz singer Miroslava Katsarova. The album is entitled “Return of the South” and takes listeners south to Brazil. There are 11 pieces in it. We bring you first the piece Parfumes written by bass player Veselin Veselinov – Eco.

Miroslava Katsarova has been on the Bulgarian jazz stage for over ten years. Influenced by Latin jazz and bossa nova, Miroslava succeeds in recreating the feeling of the South with her performances. The warmth between people and the feeling of freedom is the association that the singer makes with these latitudes. Some of the best Bulgarian jazz musicians contribute in the recreation of their exotic atmosphere. Among them are Rumen Toskov, Hristo Yotzov, Dimitar Semov, Veselin Veselinov-Eco. Miroslava’s first album was entitled “White on White” and was released in 2000. The undeniable talent in contemporary Bulgarian jazz – the late pianist Roumen Toskov – contributed to its recording. Miroslava Katsarova has devoted her second album to him.

This is what Miroslava Katzarova said for Radio Bulgaria:
“This is a collection of my songs that I have performed in recent years. I am glad I was able to invite some of my favorite fellow musicians to write new songs together with me. I’ve been working with some of them for several years – Zhivko Petrov – piano, Hristo Yotsov – percussions and Veselin Veselinov-Eco, bass. Actually Veselin wrote most of the songs and arrangements on “Back to the South”. He is a key figure in my album, because my love for the works of Astor Piazzolla is shared by him as well. We discovered that we both liked the music of this great Argentine composer and decided to include two of his compositions in the album. The first one is entitled Vuelvo al sur while the other one is “Calambre”.

The sound is closer to jazz ballads of the 1960s, but we keep the mood and atmosphere of tango nuevo. The Brazilian music has a special place in the professional interests of Miroslava Katsarova. She hosts the Latin Jazz show Dezafinado on Jazz FM. On 24 May 2008, Miroslava Katsarova received the Golden Pen award.

Miroslava Katsarova will promote her new album in May in jazz clubs in different cities across the country. She is a fan of the so-called ‘boutique’ or chamber concerts.
