March ahead, O people revived!

May 24 is the day of the Slavic alphabet, Bulgarian education, and culture. On this day Bulgarians celebrate the creation of the Glagolitic alphabet by Sts. Cyril and Methodius. Out of many songs dedicated to this day, a true anthem is “March ahead, o revived people.” Stoyan Mihailovsky wrote the lyrics as a project for a school anthem. On May 11, 1900 composer Panayot Pipkov, who was a teacher of music at that time wrote the music. The anthem has been performed in Bulgaria on the day of Bulgarian culture ever since. Today’s festive concert starts with a performance by the choir and symphony orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Our concert continues with a performance by the Radio Children choir with conductor Ilina Todorova. You are to hear the song “What this holiday gives us” (“Този празник нам дарява”). The author of the song is unknown but it is frequently performed during the celebrations of the 24th of May. 

It is May 24th. “There is some Easter festivity on this bright day. The day of the Thessaloniki brothers is a great day, a day of the spirit, a day of the resurrection of the hopes of a people,” Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov once said. Listen next to the Radio Children choir and a song based on a poem by Ivan Vazov. Author of the music is Bulgarian composer Dobri Hristov.

Our festive concert continues with a popular song based on a poem by Ran Bosilek. Its title is translated as “Native Speech.” Singers are again the children of the Radio Children Choir.

The Radio Children Choir has existed for 21 years. It was established by its current conductor Ilina Todorova. One needs to have a lot of love and patience to work with children. Ilina has these qualities and that is why children enjoy singing in the choir. There are more than 400 recordings of the choir in the fund of the BNR. There are composers writing songs, especially for the choir. Listen next to the song “Golden Letters,” performed by the Radio Children.

The next performance is also by the Radio Children choir and is dedicated to the Bulgarian alphabet.

After the Radio Children choir you are to hear a performance by the Children’s Radio Choir with conductor Hristo Nedyalkov. The song is entitled “Letters.” Music is by Evgeni Cheshmedzhiev. Lyrics are by Tsvetan Angelov.

Hristo Nedyalkov is the conductor of the Children’s Radio Choir. This choir has existed for 52 years, staging concerts all over the world. It was even called “a European ambassador of culture.” Some of the children who sang in it later became renowned musicians. Just like opera singer Ina Kuncheva and pop singer Beloslava. Let’s listen to another performance by the choir, accompanied by the Big Band of the BNR.

The festive concert on Radio Bulgaria ends with an arrangement of “March ahead, o revived people” done by composer Boris Karadimchev. A group of renowned Bulgarian pop singers perform the song.
