Bulgarian Bolata Bay among most beautiful worldwide

Cape Kaliakra at the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coastline is a favorite place for ecologists, photographers and fans of beautiful views. The wild nature, the picturesque cliffs, jutted out in the sea and the scattered remains of an ancient fortress attract tourists just like a magnet. When a person climbs up the steep rocks and takes a look down to the blue see, his or her breath stops by this unreal beauty, spread to the horizon. An embayment that seems to have just descended from paradise, opened like a shell, with fisher’s boats scattered like pearls is seen down there. The place is named Bolata and is one of the most picturesque gulfs along the Black Sea coastline. It has recently gained international popularity.

The spectacular view was noticed by The Most Beautiful Bays in the World club and in September the members of the organization welcomed the Bulgarian gulf on their annual session in the Turkish city of Bodrum. Thus Bolata entered the prestigious club, where 28 states are represented, defending the glory of 38 marvelous bays across the globe. However, Bolata will receive full membership no later than in 2013, during the next sitting of the club in Cambodia. Fans of exotic, headed to the Balkans will find it already difficult to choose between the Bodrum Bay in Turkey, the Grikos Bay of Patmos in Greece or the Bulgarian Bolata one. The interesting thing is that Bolata is not only a beautiful bay with a small beach, but also a natural reserve, seizing the local cliffs and a tiny river. The place is well known by ornithologists. They often drop by to observe bird flocks, since Via Pontica is one of their main migration routes. Besides that Bolata is the only reserve in Bulgaria that includes an aquatory, inhabited by various fish species. Scuba divers adore the bay, since many caves can be found in the cliffs under the water. “This is a very nice spot for a vacation,” Kavarna Mayor Tsonko Tsonev told a Radio Bulgaria reporter.

“Cape Kaliakra starts from the left side of the bay and a marvelous lake with cane can be found right behind it", the Mayor further said. "There are red cliffs, surrounding the gulf and those contrast against the blue see. The beach is a small one, very cozy. This is a boutique bay. The sea here is shallow and completely safe for swimming. Fishermen use it a lot, especially now in the autumn. I guess all these circumstances were the reason for the club invitation. However, I think that the fact that we succeeded in preserving Bolata through these years of overdevelopment was of a great importance too. So this is a really naturally preserved, wild spot,” the mayor is proud to say.

A steep path leads to the top of the vertical cliff over the small beach. Once you’ve reached the top, the reward will be a panoramic view of the entire location. Another seaside natural reserve is situated to the North – Taukliman, a favorite shelter of rare bird species and endangered reptiles. There are many historic remains around too, such as the ones of an antique settlement, dated back to the 6th century BC. Unique ancient stone circles and sacrificial rocks have also been discovered. Archaeologists find nearby an old Maltese cross, verifying in their opinion the active trade relations between Bulgaria, Venice and Genoa in the Middle Ages. So, our representative at “The Most Beautiful Bays in the World” Club offers a full set of natural and historical attractions, along with the magnificent view. Kavarna Mayor Tsonko Tsonev expects this membership to attract even more tourists to the region in the future.
