The year of 2012 expires in just a few days. It will be remembered with remarkable music editions that united the efforts of famous performers, composers and producers, working in the area of contemporary folklore. RB brings you an overview of some of the best songs presented in 2012.

First, we start with Staccato – shepherd’s pipe player Nedyalko Nedyalkov composed the music, Peyo Peev arranged it, it is performed by the author, accompanied by the Folk Music Orchestra of the BNR. The play is a part of an album, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the radio formation.

“My best years were related to the Rhodope Mountain,” Nelly Andreeva says. The young folk singer was born in a small Rhodope town. She graduated the Shiroka Laka Music School, where she met her husband Georgi Andreev – a composer and chief conductor of the Filip Kutev National Folklore Ensemble. He has arranged the songs from the first solo album of his wife – Galiam, Galiam. Neli performs songs from all regions as a soloist of the ensemble, but the Rhodope song remains her true love. She has gathered priceless treasures in her album, inherited from her relatives and family. Those are for instance: Male le, Stara Maichinko; Izplela sam ti, Mehmede; Kozhilio, Pisan I Sherian – all those pieces of her life, related to events and people that she remembers and loves.

The 6th solo album of Ruska Stoimenova appeared at the end of the spring under the name Imala Maika. The title coincides with the most popular song in her repertoire. The long-year soloist of the Pirin Ensemble was the first to popularize the composition of Dimitar Yanev, recorded later by many folk singers. Today Ruska Stoimenova creates hew own songs too, participates in concert shows… She has gathered 15 titles in her latest album. We pick up Snoshti Minah – a city folk song, arranged by Valeri Dimchev.

The Pirin Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances

The 100th anniversary of the Balkan War was marked in 2012. Two studio recordings of the BNR were among the numerous events that commemorated the war. The first one belongs to the Pirin Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances from the town of Blagoevgrad – Slusham Glasa Vi Zhalosten. The title was taken from a song about Georgi Sugarev – a Bulgarian revolutionary and chieftain in Macedonia. The premiere stage show of the ensemble carries the same name and it has already been presented in different cities across the country.

The new album of the Gotse Delchev Ensemble is also dedicated to the Balkan War. Less known folk samples have been gathered in it. The idea for the album belongs to folk singer Liubka Rondova and composer Nikola Vaklinov. The BNR produced the recordings. All the songs are in the rendition of the orchestra, vocal band and soloists of the Gotse Delchev Ensemble – Sofia.

“I am really thankful to the people that supported the release of the CD", said Lyubka Rondova. "The ancestors of revolutionary Todor Aleksandrov and Gen. Racho Petrov helped a lot. I am also very pleased to sing again with my ensemble. I have worked as a soloist at Gotse Delchev for more than 30 years. We all should thank very much to composer Nikola Vaklinov for the nice arrangements, for his attitude to folk art. I wish health, happiness, peace and love to all fans of Radio Bulgaria! May they never know war and separation!”

The two hosts of a famous TV folk show Daniel Spasov and Milen Ivanov have been a duo for years. They perform folk songs, as well as a special kind of folk Orthodox melodies. At the end of 2012 they gathered in their Christmas Blessing album the best Christmas songs from their repertoire. They also included some Bible plots, recreated by the people on original melodies. “We want the fairy images of the Bulgarian fest to come to live in the mind of modern people. We want the beautiful songs that have sounded in every house to sound again, wishing health and wealth, peace and love,” Daniel Spasov says.
